Circle Casting

1. Center and ground into earth’s energy.
2. Feel Earth energy moving through you through your object directing energy as a blue-white light.
3. Begin in East, walking the perimeter of the circle clockwise holding projective hand outward.

Single Cast Circle:

“I cast you, my circle,

to be a space between the worlds

to be a space of perfect love and perfect trust

and to contain the power raised within.

So Mote it Be.”

Starhawk’s Circle Casting from The Spiral Dance:

“By the earth that is Her body,

and by the air that is her breath,

and by the fire of Her bright spirit

and by the living waters of Her womb,

the circle is cast.”

Kalessin, owner of the Acorn Guild Press publishing company, provides some history about this circle casting:

“I thought you’d like to know that the “Short-Form Circle Casting” from Starhawk’s book “The Spiral Dance” was actually written by Victor H. Anderson, and is the traditional Circle Casting chant of the Anderson Feri Tradition. Victor was one of Starhawk’s teachers.”

~~~~~~~~~
Thrice Cast Circle:
Walk the circle 3 times, see the three drawn circles spiraling to become a sphere.
“I conjure this circle as a sacred space,
A place between the worlds where the worlds meet.
I conjure this circle as a boundary
To protect, preserve and contain the energies raised herein.
Thrice I do conjure this circle as a safe place, a sacred place
Where the Divine resides, where spirit and matter are one in perfect love and perfect trust.
So mote it be!”
4. Drop projecting hand to shut off the energy flow.
Back in the East: “Above and below, the circle is sealed.”
Cutting a Door (with a Tool):
  1. take your wand/athame and insert it into the energy wall where it intersects the floor with the intent of creating an opening.
  2. pull the tip of the tool up to a few inches past your head height. Pull it across about 3 feet, then downward to the floor again.
  3. lay the tool on the floor with the tip outside the circle and the handle to the inside, anchoring both the circle and the door.
  4. step through and get what you need quickly and calmly.
  5. once back inside, pick up tool and carefully retrace the edges of the door, sealing the cut you made.
  6. walk the perimeter of the circle once clockwise to ensure the circle’s energy flow has been restored.
Cutting a Door (without a tool):
- Solitary Wicca for Life, Arin Murphy-Hiscock
  1. hold your hands out in front of you, palms together. Slowly insert them into the energy of the circle, willing it to accept your energy.
  2. carefully pull hands apart and visualize the wall of energy parting like curtains.
  3. step through, allowing energy curtains to fall shut behind you. Return to the circle and perform the same action on the outside.
  4. step through and smooth the curtains back into the wall of the circle.
  5. walk the perimeter of the circle once clockwise to ensure the circle’s energy flow has been restored.
Variations on Circle Casting:
-try using various tools, or just your hand
-visualize the circle being different colors, perhaps to correspond with ritual
-program the energy for a specific purpose
-try casting the circle/calling the quarters widdershins for a banishing ritual
Casting the Circle in your Hand:
“I call Air for speed,
Fire to cleanse,
Water to bless,
Earth to manifest,
Spirit to seal.”
*visualize a ball of energy in your hand. Intend it to form and grow into a circle. Drop the ball of energy and imagine that it explodes out in all directions to form a circle that encompasses you.
“as above, so below. So mote it be.”
- To Stir a Magick Cauldron, Silver Ravenwolf
~~~~~

Taking Up the Circle:

  1. stand in center of circle and extend receptive hand out toward circle wall. Center personal energy, then ground it into the earth.
  2. draw the circle energy into your hand and down into the earth moving counterclockwise.

“In perfect love, trust and peace,

The circle is open, but never broken.

May the peace of the Lord and Lady be ever in my heart.

Merry Meet, Merry Part and Merry Meet again!”

  1. drop your hand, shutting off the energy flow and disconnect from the earth and shake off residual energy.

“So mote it be!”

Ground and Center.

The Demi-Circle Split Dismissal

  1. stand in center of circle and bring hands up over head so that your fingers and palms touch. Then turn your hands so that they are back to back.
  2. center and ground, breath deeply. Sense the energy extending from your fingers gently inserting itself into the curved roof of your circle.
  3. slowly begin to lower your hands to your sides, keeping your arms straight. As you do, visualize a seam opening within the circle; the seam is aligned with your fingertips, so that the circle separates gently along the top, front and back.
  4. visualize the energy flowing into the ground until your hands are at your sides and the circle’s energy is gone.

Channeling Circle Energy into a Tool

  1. choose the tool (wand, athame, altar, etc)
  2. hold the tool in front of you with both hands. Center and ground. Reach out and touch tool to the energy of the circle, visualize energy being drawn into the tool. You can stand still or move counterclockwise to collect the energy. (if you cannot hold the tool, place projective hand upon the tool and reach up with receptive hand and guide energy through you to reach the tool through your arms.)
  3. shake off and ground residual energy. Ground and center.

    Thank you so much for your honest and kind information. I too am a newer witch and find that sometimes the information in the books are a little complicated when all it needs is to be written in simple English.

    Blessed Be.

  5. I agree, Melanie – sometimes being straightforward just works best. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in flowery language that you miss the energy of the spell because you’re worried about reciting something correctly. Thanks for writing in <3
